What instruments can I learn to make?

What can I expect from the course? What will I get out of it?

The instructor John Vergara has many years making and repairing stringed instruments. With a passion for teaching, John will make an instrument with you from beginning to end. Depending on your level of ability and experience you will be tasked with various aspects of luthiery with guided instruction. You reap the benefits of years of professional experience and mentorship. You will also have access to tools, materials and equipment that most people do not have.

Do I keep the instrument after the course is over?

The student doesn’t keep the instrument due to the fact that the instructor typically makes 85% of the instrument. However, this instrument can be purchased for $2500 (guitar, oud), ($1500 Puerto Rican cuatro)

Is this course online?

No. Two weeks in person.

Will I have a day off?

Usually the first Saturday is designated to be off depending on the progress of the instrument since 2 weeks is a short amount of time to build an instrument in the first place.

Where is the course held?

In the shop of Lord of the Strings run by luthier John Vergara.

If I’m coming from far away, where will I stay?

The course has two options, one for Local tuition only

The second option is for commuters. If you are coming from far and need affordable accommodations Tuition with room and board. This option will give you a private bedroom with shared bath and kitchen in the beautiful Beacon, NY 5 minutes from the shop and 2 minutes from Mount Beacon.

How will I get to the shop everyday?

People who choose to room and board with our accommodations will have transportation to and from the workshop.

How will I arrive at Beacon, NY?

Beacon is conveniently located an hour north of New York City. You can take the train from New York City at Grand Central Station to Beacon on the Hudson Lina (MTA) or Metro North Railroad. There is a free bus at the Beacon train station that can take you to the shop (Lord of the Strings) or to the room in which you’ll be staying should you opt for tuition with room and boarding. There is also Stewart airport just 20 minutes from Beacon. While there are limited flights to and from this airport, it is worth looking into due to its close proximity to Beacon. There are flights to and from Florida and even international flights available.

Is food included in the arrangement?

Due to people’s diets and eating preferences, it’s best they purchase their own meals.

Is it dangerous to make instruments and do woodworking?

Yes, however you will not be tasked with dangerous operations or things you are uncomfortable with. We are dedicated to safety and there are a few guidelines to keep in mind. Hair if long must be tried back behind you or in a bun. Long sleeves shall be rolled up. No hanging jewelry should be worn. Safety goggles are a MUST. Hearing protection and respirators will be used for particular processes. All safety P.P.E. (personal protection equipment) will be provided.

What are the age requirements for the course?

The youngest age accepted is 15, however they will need a parental consent form submitted as well as proof of insurance. The old age limit is more about cognitive function as there is no limit for this.

Am I allowed to record videos and take photographs?

Yes, recording is allowed with the instructor’s permission however it is not to be uploaded for public viewing.

What are the local attractions and stores in Beacon, New York?

There is a very large contemporary art museum (DIA Beacon) which attracts an international crowd. Many art galleries, restaurants, shops, breweries and cafes along Main Street. There is a regular supermarket in town (Keyfood)

Beacon also has a natural food market (Beacon Natural Market)
